Tahe Marine Bayspirit 17/3 Kayak Review

LAST IN STOCK BAY SPIRIT ON SALE NOW!!

The Tahe Bayspirit 17/3 can be considered an adaptation of the Wind 535. The hull shape differs in that it features a shallow arch as opposed to the shallow vee shape found in the Wind series. The Bayspirit suits all skill levels that may want to kayak efficiently for an hour or refine their skills with a lifetime quality craft; however, while the long, flat waterline of the boat increases speed, tracking, and efficiency, there is a loss of maneuverability making the kayak somewhat one-dimensional.

Paddler Fit

at 22" wide and with a generously-sized cockpit, the Tahe Bayspirit 17/3 best accommodates medium-to-large paddlers in the 170 lb – 235 lb range. The cockpit features a simple and robust low ergo style backband, a padded composite seat, and padded thighbraces that are perfectly situated. Easy adjust gravity style footbraces easily fit larger feet and can be easily adjusted both on and off the water.

Kayak Efficiency & Maneuverability

Larger paddlers are often forced to sacrifice efficiency as their choice of quality sea kayaks is less than ideal. This means they’re often forced to choose from a selection of short, wide and poorly designed recreational and/or day touring boats and are left trying to keep up with everyone else in their long, skinny rocket ships. Accordingly, we are pleasantly surprised by the quick acceleration of the Tahe Bayspirit 17/3 to a comfortable touring pace.

The hull design incorporates a long, flat hull with minimal rocker to highlight a long waterline length for easy tracking (the ability to paddle straight) and reduce the amount of course correction strokes needed. Even without the skeg being deployed, the Bayspirit is only prone to the slightest weathercocking. However, due to the lack of rocker, a little more effort is required when turning and edging the kayak.

Kayak Stability

We rate the Tahe Bayspirit 17/3 has having decent initial stability due to the accentuated waterline, but the arched hull and soft chine sides may mean new paddlers find it a little 'twitchy'. Secondary stability is rated slightly lower as the rounded sides do require more conrol and skill for confident edging.

Kayak Roll & Rescue

The cockpit area is slightly longerwider and deeper to better accommodate larger paddlers and ensure easy exits and reentries. The HV’s cockpit is simplistic and robust with the ergo style backband being the only adjustable feature. Padded thighbraces are well placed to achieve the good contact points necessary for long term skills development. The Bayspirit 17/3 aft deck is low enough so as to ‘NOT’ interfere with layback rolls, and its flat nature makes an ideal platform for self-rescues and recoveries.

Kayak Touring

We rated the Tahe Bayspirit 17/3 can easily accommodates enough gear capacity for extended trips if packed correctly. However, the narrow ends do prevent paddlers from carrying more than just the essentials. Cruising speed is quickly achieved and is easily maintained even when fully loaded.
